Summer will be less lazy and hazy but more crazy with BEACH BRAWL, the Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild’s first intra-league roller derby scrimmage. Featuring the Cool Aloe Veras versus the Sassy Sunburns it’s the perfect event to kick off the beginning of warm weather and frosty treats with your family.

“We are especially excited about this event because a portion of the proceeds will be going to the Lethbridge Womanspace Resource Centre,” says Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild president Heather Zarichney, aka Half Pint Havoc. “Womanspace is an amazing advocacy group and we are pleased to be able to throw our support behind them.”

The scrimmage will be held Friday, June 10 at the Adams Ice Centre. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first whistle at 7 p.m. Teams will be comprised of existing skaters within the league, which will make for an exciting match for spectators and even the players.

“We’ve played together, as a team and in practice, for so long. We already know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and each team will have their strategies in place to shut down their opponents. It’s sure to be an exciting game,” says Bradford Recsky, aka Wrecsky, head coach for the league.

Womanspace Resource Centre delivers financial literacy services to low-income women in Lethbridge and area. The organization runs workshops several times a year and also delivers one-on-one services to clients, such as help with budgeting, debt and establishing savings plans. Womanspace also engages in community research and organizing with the goal of achieving social, political, and economic equality.

Shannon Phillips, Chair of the Womanspace Resource Centre is delighted with the partnership. “It’s a natural fit,” says Phillips. “Roller Derby is a creative sport for a great diversity of women, and a way for women to get involved that is part athleticism and part expression. Both organizations are committed to being accessible and serving all women, and that’s important to us.”

In addition to the fast-paced action of roller derby, there will be entertainment provided by the Ammena Dance Company, beer gardens and an opportunity to win a full roller skate package valued at $340 courtesy of Steel Sass.

Advance tickets for this all ages, licensed event are $10 and available at Steel Sass or from your favourite roller girl. Kids 10 and under are free. Tickets are also available at the door. Come out, have some fun, while supporting a great cause!
