After only two years since their founding, members of the Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild will be representing Lethbridge at a western regional tournament this weekend in Nelson, BC.

The tournament, which runs June 15-17, is featuring the top women’s roller derby teams from BC, Alberta and the Yukon. The LRDG’s travel team, the Deathbridge Derby Dames, secured the eighth and final spot when a previous ranked team had to decline their invitation from the Roller Derby Association of Canada.

Playing against Western Canada’s elite, team captain Lindsey Skakum, aka Dream Whip, knows the skaters are up for the challenge.

“These upcoming bouts will be the steepest mountain the Dames have ever had to climb, and frankly, the best opportunity we have had to date,” says Skakum. “We are going in prepared for everything.”

The Dames’ first bout is set for Friday at 2 p.m. (Pacific) against the Terminal City All Stars of Vancouver. Currently ranked second against the Dames’ thirty-second ranking in Canada, Skakum expects her skaters to go in with all they have against Terminal City. “I told my team, ‘Any personal goal you’ve been holding back from, now is the time to bring it.’”

Fans and supporters will be able to catch all the tournament action on Canuck Derby TV. Of the eight teams playing in the tournament, five are from Alberta. The league’s next home game is June 23 at the Henderson Ice Arena with the Coalbank Crushers facing the Windy City Wenches. Tickets are available on the league website.­
