Skates and gear available

If you decide to join, you can rent gear. Limited sizes – we recommend purchasing your own gear ASAP. Please purchase a mouth guard.

No experience required

Whether you are a junior or adult skater, we’ll teach you everything you need to get started!

At roller derby registration, you’ll be able to try on roller derby gear, rent loaner gear, try rollerskating, meet your coaches, meet other members, learn about the LRDG, register and pay fees. First official practice for new members is TBA! See below for registration and practice information.

Registration is open to junior skaters aged 8-17 and adults aged 18 plus! Skaters will need a provincial health care card to complete registration.

  • Email from Roller Derby Canada Services after insurance payment is received (e-transfer only).
  • You will need to show email insurance proof at first practice.

  • Gear loan fee ($100) must be paid on registration day.
  • Skating and membership fee is due at new skater registration TBA
  • E-transfer info (preferred method of payment)

    • In the notes section, please list the skater’s Firstname Lastname.
  • Cash or cheque payments available during new skater intake.
  • Insurance payment ($57.50) is due direct to Roller Derby Canada Services and must by paid by first practice

FAQ

What can I expect at registration?

You will fill out digital paperwork to register, as well as insurance. You may also try on loaner gear which is available for rent. You will have the opportunity to try rollerskating before you register. Please bring your provincial health care card.


Can I try rollerskating before I sign up?

Yes! We have try-it opportunities at our spring and fall recruitment, when we have the venue space to do so.


Where does roller derby practice take place?

We skate at the University of Lethbridge gym from September to November and January to April. We skate in the Lethbridge Curling Club April to July.


When do you practice?

Future schedules subject to change due to venue availability.

How much to join roller derby?

Fees vary depending on venue costs for each skate session. Here’s what fees have been previously.

$20 yearly membership fee
$100 skating fees Fall session, September – November (one practice/week)
$100 skating fees Winter session (estimated), January-April (one practice/week)
$200 skating fees Spring/Summer session (estimated), April-July (two practices/week)
$57.50 yearly insurance
Plus gear, uniforms and travel costs.


Do I have to skate all year?

We take time off between each skate session. We typically take a few weeks’ break in December/January, April, July/August/September.

Some skaters sign up for spring/summer session. Others only sign up for the fall/winter sessions.

If skaters want to progress and grow with their team, it’s recommended they join spring/summer, fall and winter skate sessions.


What gear do I need? How much to rent roller derby gear?

Roller derby package includes:
Roller skates, helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards.
$100 deposit with $50 refund when gear is returned.
Please buy a mouth guard for first practice!


I want to buy my own gear. Where should I go?

We can recommend several Canadian roller derby retailers. All have online stores and can work with you via email to help determine the best size for the skater.

When do I pay?

Membership fee, league dues and gear rental can be paid at registration or via e-transfer practice start. Cash and cheque are also accepted.

Each member will pay for their own insurance directly to Roller Derby Canada Services Inc. Please pay by first practice. You will need to show email confirmation of insurance at first practice.


What should I wear to practice?

Wear athletic clothing that you can easily move in. Avoid baggy pants as knee pads do not fit over them.


About the Coaches

Head Coach Cherri Blaster

Coach Cherri (she/her) has been a skater, coach and ref with the LRDG since 2010. She is a Skate IA certified instructor, teaches in person and online rollerdance classes and runs recreational skating events through Roller Skate Lethbridge. Cherri coaches in the junior and adult programs.

Coach TNT

TNT (he/him) was an original LRDG junior program member in 2012 and progressed into coaching in 2021. He was a member of the 2020 open division Junior Team Canada and also plays with the Deathbridge City Rollers adult team. TNT coaches in the junior and adult programs.

Coach Gongshow

Gongshow (she/her) has been playing roller derby with the LRDG since 2010. In 2023, she progressed into coaching in the junior program. Gongshow is a registered massage therapist and her knowledge of body mechanics complements her coaching technique. Gongshow coaches in the junior program, new skater adult program and currently skates with the Deathbridge City Rollers.

Coach Shredher

Shredher (she/her) started roller derby in 2018 at the age of 9 and has been a powerhouse on the track since. Shredher skates for the level 3 Windy City Wipeouts, is a two-time Junior Team Canada player (2023 and 2025) and has been coaching in the LRDG junior program since 2023. In her spare time, she also competes in mixed martial arts.
