“Skating just isn’t an activity, it’s a state of mind.”

Jennifer Davis of the Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild, aka Jenny Dreadful, wanted to organize their next fundraiser to help illustrate that. A Love-Skate Relationship Art Auction and Fundraiser is set August 18 at the Owl Acoustic Lounge.

The league has been collecting pieces from local artists such as Andy Davies, Len Komanac and Natalie Vandenberg that will be themed after love, skating or love of skating. Roller derby players Davis, Cassandra Hueser, aka Rebbles Flintstone and Martina Emard, aka Cherri Blaster will also be submitting pieces.

“We have been requesting pieces since May and they are now being submitted. Some of the pieces will be on display at the Owl throughout August,” says Davis. “You can come down and preview the pieces but they all won’t be available for sale until the event.”

The silent art auction and fundraiser, which starts at 8 p.m. on August 18 will also feature a night of entertainment. Three local bands: Shipbreaker, Church and Lustre Creame are donating their time and will take the stage starting at 9 p.m. While there is no cover, the league will be gratefully accepting donations at the door.

All proceeds will go to the Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild and their skaters in support of their summer and fall bout season. Davis says the Love-Skate Relationship Art Auction and Fundraiser could of never happened if it wasn’t for the local arts community. “The amount of support has been amazing! When we reached out to the artists to donate a piece, we were pleased by the response. We’ll have a wide variety of items to bid on there. And of course the Owl has been great to offer their venue.”

If artists still wish to donate a piece in time for the auction, they may get in touch with Davis at jennifer.nerissa.davis@gmx.net.
